New rules could free 12,000 convicted 'Crack' offenders from prison



Well, it looks like new rules regarding sentences for convicted crack users could set up to 12,000 inmates free. Historically, possession of crack cocaine by law would carry a harsher sentence than powder cocaine. This new rule would put the two forms of the drug in the same category carrying a more similar sentence. Michael Nachmanoff, the federal public defender for the Eastern District of Virginia had this to say when he spoke with CNN:

“This really has been one of the great stains on our federal criminal justice system for 20 years or more. This disparity between the punishment for crack cocaine and powder was really unjustified.”
